Celltech Group’s Sustainable Initiatives:
Using Heat Pumps to Cut Carbon Emissions
Sustainability is a global concern, and the need to reduce our environmental impact has never been more critical. At Celltech Group, we are committed to mitigating our carbon footprint by adopting sustainable practices. In this article, we will discuss our target to halve our carbon dioxide intensity by 2030, our focus on transferring to more carbon-efficient alternatives, and how we use heat pumps to reduce carbon emissions.
Reducing Carbon Footprint
Fossil fuels—including coal, oil, and natural gas—have been powering economies for over 150 years and currently supply about 80% of the world’s energy1, most of which goes to waste.
Having studied the numerous alternatives, we learned that heat pumps are an effective tool for industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint. They provide a cost-efficient, environmentally friendly, and reliable energy source that can be applied to any industry or infrastructure. An air-to-liquid heat pump provides efficient heating by transferring heat energy from the outdoor air to the inside space with the help of a refrigerant, allowing the system to operate with very little electricity. As a result, it is a popular alternative for heating and cooling homes, businesses, and other buildings. At Celltech Solutions Oy (our manufacturing plant in Finland), we use heat pumps at our factory to significantly increase our energy efficiency and reduce our carbon emissions.
Using Heat Pumps at Celltech Solutions
“Our factory in Tampere uses an air-to-liquid heat pump, which is the same type as the traditional heat pump used in homes, only bigger”, explains Ville Kaivo, Business Area Manager, Celltech Solutions Oy. “Our factory heat pump is one of the biggest installations in the industrial field in Finland. We do not use fossil fuels at all, and our electricity is produced 100% fossil free by hydro, wind and nuclear. This is due to the electricity production agreement made with our electricity supplier. This, in turn, helps us cut our carbon footprint”, he continues.
Benefits of Using Heat Pumps
Heat pumps provide various advantages, including:
- Heat pumps are highly efficient since they transfer heat rather than generate it, resulting in decreased energy usage and lower energy costs.
- Heat pumps are a more environmentally friendly solution because they do not utilise fossil fuels and generate fewer greenhouse emissions than typical heating systems.
- Heat pumps can keep the indoor temperature stable, minimising the need for frequent thermostat adjustments.
- Heat pumps can last up to 20 years or more with proper maintenance, which is longer than many traditional heating systems.
- Heat pumps require less maintenance than traditional heating systems because they have fewer moving components and do not emit emissions that cause wear and tear.
Target to halve CO2 intensity by 2030
Celltech Group recognises the value of sustainability and the necessity to minimise our environmental effects. Therefore, we have established a goal of halving our carbon dioxide intensity by 2030 compared to 2019/2020.
We are working to streamline our transport and transition to more carbon-efficient options. In addition, we focus on energy efficiency and the shift to renewable energy sources to reduce emissions from production and operations (Scopes 1 and 2).
Our mother company Addtech AB, reports our climate data annually to CDP and use the TCFD framework to perform climate risk analyses and climate scenario analyses.
By using heat pumps, we have become a more sustainable organisation and are committed to keeping our sustainability plan in progress. We strive to positively influence the environment by using new ways to produce our required energy and do our social responsibility as well as possible.
